Aircraft Asset Assessment – The B737-600

June 6, 2022

Market Presence. In developing the B737NG Boeing created another more than capable product. Range, operating costs and interior flexibility had all been addressed. The range performance of the higher gross weight –600 examples was greatly increased but still failed to generate orders. The –600 is able to fly over 3,200nm compared to the 2,420nm of the –500. A number of operators simply do not require long range capability for such a small aircraft. The -600, along with the A318, were developed based on a market structure that could not be sustained in a much more liberalized operating environment. The MD95 was perhaps the better aircraft in meeting the needs of the market. The -600 is now replaced by the much more relevant E195E2 and A220-100. The lease rentals of the -600 have been under pressure for a decade or more and lessors will be anxious to ensure that the type remains with the existing lessee rather than face the prospect of remarketing.
