Market Presence. The -700 achieved notable but limited success, building upon the solid foundations laid by the B737-200ADV and then the B737-400. In terms of the competition, principally the A319, orders for the Airbus product finally outstripped the Boeing product, 1,486 versus 1,128 reversing an earlier trend. The Airbus product was introduced only a year earlier than the -700. The B737-700 is still relatively endemic but not so popular as other types and concentration with Southwest remains in evidence but for how long remains to be seen. With many -700s in storage this an issue for the variant and when considering the fleet, excluding those operated by Southwest, the 200+ represents a significant proportion of the remaining fleet. The fleet of Southwest represents half the 1,000 active/inactive although the operator base still numbers some 74 for the other 500 aircraft.
